Caring for Our Patients and Each Other

As the first year of our 2023-27 Strategic Plan is now complete, I am pleased to share with you the 2023 MaineHealth Annual Report.

The stories herein reflect just a few of the accomplishments and progress we’ve made toward our goals supporting our vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.

Nurturing a culture of caring for our patients and each other is at the core of delivering the very best quality and clinical outcomes. It begins with the best people, programs and resources. In this year’s report you’ll read how we are investing in attracting and sustaining a talented workforce – one of health care’s primary challenges today – through innovative programs, ongoing career development, and innovations in technology.

You’ll also learn how our physicians and practices responded selflessly to the challenge of increased demand for services in 2022-23 as patients who postponed care during the pandemic returned in volumes. The MaineHealth Medical Group increased patient access while also focusing on improving the patient experience, clinical quality and safety.

A theme throughout this year’s report is how MaineHealth continues to leverage the latest technology and research to develop innovative programs and solutions to enhance patient care. We thrive in a culture of continuous learning and an environment where everyone can bring their best self to work. We also recognize the impact that our health care footprint has on the environment, and have incorporated environment sustainability strategies and targets into our planning.

We continue to improve the delivery of behavioral health services and treatment for people with mental illness and substance use disorders. We’re engaged in research to close the gap on rural and other health disparities in Maine. We’ve established school-based health centers in rural communities to provide access to services that support student health and well-being in a trusted environment.

Excellence in quality, safety and patient experience begins with a commitment to doing the little things right every single time. I want to express my deepest appreciation to our dedicated 23,000 care team members who work tirelessly to deliver these touchpoints of exceptional care each and every day. I also want to thank our Board and leaders for their knowledge and expertise in helping to guide MaineHealth in fulfilling our vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.
