Innovating and Adapting to Serve our Patients and Communities with Excellence
Each year, the MaineHealth Annual Report offers an opportunity to reflect on our shared journey—where we have been, the challenges we face, and the progress we are making together toward our vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.
This past year has underscored both the challenges and the promise of health care. Across the nation, health systems continue to grapple with workforce shortages, financial strain, and complex patient needs. Yet, at MaineHealth, we remain strong because of the extraordinary commitment of our care team and community partners. Their dedication allows us to innovate, to adapt, and to continue serving our patients and communities with excellence.
We are proud of the measurable advances we have made.
Engagement and satisfaction among our care team improved again in 2025, reflecting progress toward a culture where our people feel valued and supported in their work. This matters not only to MaineHealth, but also to the communities that depend on us, because it ensures that the people providing care are able to give their very best.
We are addressing critical workforce needs through efforts like our Nursing Residency program, which helps retain new nurses and strengthens the future of care in Maine and New Hampshire. We are expanding access, whether by launching our Community Paramedicine program that brings clinical services directly into patients’ homes, by increasing virtual care services, or by opening new facilities that reimagine primary care. We have invested in our Interpreter and Cross-Cultural Services resources to ensure patients at all MaineHealth locations have the communication services they need for safe, patient-centered care without barriers.
Innovation is shaping the way we deliver care: robotic-assisted cancer surgery, artificial intelligence to help prevent blindness, and advanced techniques to detect and treat disease earlier are already improving outcomes. We are at the forefront of research, leading groundbreaking projects on recovery from tick-borne illness that is on the rise in our communities, cancer treatment and much more. At the same time, we continue to advance preventive health—protecting children through vaccination, supporting rural mothers and babies through training and virtual care, and growing our pediatric cardiac surgery program so families can access lifesaving care close to home.
We also recognize that health extends beyond clinical care. That is why we are committed to addressing substance use disorder, supporting healthy aging, advancing food security, and reducing our climate impact. These are examples of our responsibility not only to treat illness, but also to build healthier, more resilient communities for future generations.
As I reflect on 2025, I am grateful for the trust our patients and communities place in us, for the steadfast support of our donors and community partners, and most of all, for the extraordinary people of MaineHealth who make this work possible. Together, we are navigating a complex time in health care with resilience, purpose and hope.
Thank you for joining us on this journey. The progress reflected in these pages is only the beginning of what we can accomplish—together.
Sincerely,

Andrew T. Mueller, MD
