Exceptional Cardiac Care in a Space Designed for Healing

When a patient arrives at the Malone Family Tower, MaineHealth Maine Medical Center’s (MHMMC) new cardiovascular and cardiac care facility, a world-class care experience begins.

The 300,000 square foot, eight-story tower represents the modernization and expansion of our Portland campus to provide the highest quality of care to our community. Patients enter through the Tower’s dedicated Congress Street entrance, welcomed by a stunning seven-story Atrium, and their journey to receive care from the best team of complex cardiac and cardiovascular specialists in Northern New England begins.

“Every aspect of the Malone Family Tower was designed to provide an unmatched patient experience,” said Marco Diaz, MD, Chair of Cardiovascular Services. “The enhanced clinical space supports care innovation, quality and safety while the intuitive layout and private rooms really make a difference as patients and families embark on what can be a stressful and complex healing journey.”

“The Malone Family Tower is a much-needed investment in our patients, our care team and our entire region,” said MaineHealth Southern Region President Britt Crewse. “Without a doubt, the modern clinical care space in this facility will improve our ability to serve our state’s most acutely ill patients with the highest-quality care.”

Patients continue to the Admitting Area and the Pre-Post Pod, a 40-bed dedicated space for procedural patients, to prepare for surgery. Nineteen state-of-the-art procedure rooms await, providing capacity for advanced procedures, interdisciplinary care teams and cutting-edge technologies, including ceiling mounted robotic equipment, monitors and more, to provide quality care and the best possible outcomes for our patients.

The Malone Family Tower offers 96 private, universal patient rooms designed for optimal healing. Rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows specifically angled to maximize patient views and access to natural light, while reducing incidents of direct sun and glare.

A state-of-the-art green roof provides an opportunity for all to enjoy the healing effects of live greenery. Located on the sixth floor, the dedicated outdoor space serves the wellness of patients, care team members and visitors while benefiting the environment.

“This new building has created a whole other level of excitement and gratitude among the team members and that will translate to the patients,” said Dr. Diaz.

The final piece of a multi-year expansion and modernization project to enhance patient access to hospital-based care, create more private rooms and help facilitate better patient outcomes, the Malone Family Tower officially opened in June of 2024.

A Systemwide Commitment to Improving Cancer Care

A patient receives care in MaineHealth Franklin Hospital’s cancer care and IV therapy unit. In July, the unit moved into a new space overlooking the hospital’s healing garden, where a variety of colorful shrubs and perennials bloom throughout the season, offering a calming and supportive environment for patients undergoing lengthy, often hours-long treatments.

When caring for patients in some of their most stressful moments, every member of the care team must be united in achieving the best possible outcomes.

As the cancer care provider for more than 70% of cancer cases in Maine, with most care provided in rural or community settings, MaineHealth is committed to providing the highest quality care, in every setting.

MaineHealth underscored this commitment by applying for and receiving ASCO-QOPI (American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Quality Oncology Practice Initiative) certification, the standard-bearer of cancer care and contemporary oncology. To meet this prestigious certification, ASCO studied all areas of MaineHealth’s oncology practices, including staff and patient education, safe chemotherapy administration, and assessment of overall patient well-being.

To achieve this national recognition, a system-wide cohort of care team members including physicians, pharmacists, nurses and analysts, united to implement best practices for cancer care delivery.

Not only did this cross-disciplinary team codify and streamline MaineHealth’s provider workflows, but it also placed a particular emphasis on approaching the patient’s whole person and understanding their care. For example, within the first six months of 2024, 89% of cancer patients were screened for tobacco use within the first twelve weeks of their initial consults, and patients are now being connected to smoking cessation interventions that help reduce cancer risks earlier in their care. Data also indicates that quality initiatives implemented because of the ASCO-QOPI certification have resulted in increased patient understanding and satisfaction with their care at MaineHealth.

Accelerated Wound Healing Through Innovative Therapies

Care team members at MHMMC Wound Care – Sanford tend to a patient in the new Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy machines, which deliver 100% oxygen under pressure for optimum healing.

In December of 2023, MaineHealth Wound Care – Sanford, a department of MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC), opened in its newly renovated location at 25A June Street, and introduced an innovative tool designed to accelerate wound healing: Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Therapy.

“Without a doubt, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a terrific tool to have available for patients suffering with complex wounds,” said John Griffin, MD, Wound Care Specialist. “We in the clinic have had some wonderful success preserving limbs that would otherwise have been lost and resolving problems that would otherwise require extensive surgery.”

The team at Wound Care – Sanford has been carefully trained to provide knowledgeable, trusted Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, a process that has already helped countless patients.

“Like most people, I didn’t realize what HBO therapy entailed until I met with the staff and learned all the aspects of it,” said Cathy Moores, a recent patient at MaineHealth Wound Care – Sanford. “I felt safe and well taken care of as therapy transpired and equally at ease with the wound nurses each time I had my visits. The care team educated me and took the time to listen to all my questions and provide support. It felt nice to be cared for by competent staff in such a nice facility.”

What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO)?

With HBO therapy, patients breathe in pure oxygen while in a hyperbaric chamber. This pressure increases the oxygen in the blood and tissues and promotes healing. HBO therapy has been proven to accelerate wound healing in patients diagnosed with conditions such as certain types of ulcers, surgical wounds, trauma wounds, crash injuries and more.
