In June, the latest milestone in the Maine Medical Center $536 Million Master Facilities Project was completed, with the opening of a new 108,000-square-foot medical office building at 92 Campus Drive in Scarborough.

This state-of-the-art facility brings together neurology, neurosurgery, rehabilitative medicine, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) and vascular surgery practices in one regional center for specialty care. Patients now have easy access to the most advanced treatments, diagnostics, and imaging services – including a new state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner – in one location. The neuroscience practice offers seamless care for patients with neurologic disorders and provides the opportunity for better collaboration between providers. In addition, the new otolaryngology practice features enhanced services, including allergy therapy, audiology and the Balance Center.

“The new facility will dramatically improve the experience of patients visiting these practices,” said Joel Botler, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Maine Medical Center. “They will receive top-notch, patient-centered care at a facility that’s right off the highway.”

Constructing the future of patient care

Another key component of MMC’s project – construction of the new Malone Family Tower – also progressed through the year, with work centering on removing the remains of the old parking garage, further excavation and creating the foundation for the cardiovascular tower. Already completed parts of the project include:

  • The addition of two patient care floors with 64 new oncology patient rooms to the Coulombe Family Tower, topped by the new Sisters Heliport
  • An addition of three levels to the visitor parking garage for an additional 225 parking spaces
  • Construction of a modern and convenient employee garage on nearby St. John Street.

Altogether, the project will create 128 new private patient rooms and add 19 procedure rooms for surgeries and other complex treatments. The completed facilities have already begun benefiting patients near and far. The placement of the Sisters Heliport on the same building housing the emergency department has shaved critical time from the trips trauma patients take to get emergency treatment. And, the additional patient rooms in the Coulombe Family Tower provided flexibility vital to MMC’s pandemic response.
