Leading through Change

As we approach almost two years of a world forever changed by the COVID-19 pandemic, I am privileged to be part of the MaineHealth team that continues to lead Northern New England’s health care response.

I am both inspired and proud of the incredible work MaineHealth has accomplished over the past year. I joined MaineHealth midyear as CEO in April 2021 following the retirement of longtime leader Bill Caron. Bill joined Maine Medical Center in 1992 and then MaineHealth in 1998, and it was under his steady hand that our organization not only developed into the industry role-model it is today, but one poised to care for the 1.1 million people we serve in Maine and New Hampshire during one of the most challenging periods in our history.

Bill Caron

Longtime leader Bill Caron, retired in April 2021

I want to express our profound gratitude to Bill for his leadership over the past 29 years. Bill was the driving force behind building MaineHealth into a health system nationally recognized for quality of care and financial strength – and one that delivers every day on our vision of “working together so our communities are the healthiest in America.” We wish Bill the very best in retirement.

In these Annual Report pages, you will see how MaineHealth put our vision in action in 2021. From clinical care in our hospitals, to standing up vaccination clinics that put more than 430,000 shots in arms in 10 months, to administering more than 700,000 (and counting) COVID-19 tests, our pandemic response – which continues today – reflects the innovation and dedication of the entire MaineHealth care team. We also formed the MaineHealth Medical Group – the largest medical group in northern New England – to unify our employed providers, specialty and primary care practices. We advanced our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and continued to invest in infrastructure, research and our communities.

Amid a pandemic that continues to challenge us, we remain a strong and unified health system, never standing still, always pushing forward to innovate, lead and provide exceptional care for the patients and communities we serve.
